History

The traditional song “Roll in My Sweet Baby’s Arms” has been performed by artists as varied as Bill Monroe, Leon Russell, Willie Nelson, Del McCoury, and Jerry Lee Lewis. Phish decided to add its name to the list on 11/18/94. “Reverend” Jeff Mosier had joined the tour two nights before, sitting in with Phish for a few bluegrass songs each evening. Phish was using the opportunity to debut a number of traditional bluegrass songs, and “Roll in My Sweet Baby’s Arms” was brought out as the first song of a two song encore that evening (Mosier played banjo on both “Sweet Baby” and “Runaway Jim”). “Roll in My Sweet Baby’s Arms” was also played the following evening, 11/19/94, during the impromptu parking lot jam outside the IU Auditorium in Bloomington.
