Gary Glitter's radio mega-hit is one of the ultimate audience-participation songs in rock history, and it was only a matter of time before Phish decided to capitalize on its interactive possibilities. The tune was performed as a show opener on 11/20/98 at the Hampton Coliseum, and the crowd was ever so happy to offer up some “Heys” in the appropriate places, completing the call and response requirements of the song. Though this audience factor is not very audible on the Hampton Comes Alive recording of the song, audience tapes reveal the thousands of fans’ contributions in all their Pavlovian glory.
